In Dave We Trust
Today, Wayne Gretzky finally did the inevitable and stepped down as head coach for the Phoenix Coyotes. While many outsiders may think that’s a bad thing, the truth is that “The Great One” just wasn’t that great of a coach. His record over his 4-year tenure was only better than 2 other teams (St. Louis Blues and Los Angeles Kings) and his style of “my system is no system” just didn’t work.
Luckily, there’s a light at the end of the tunnel. It was rumored shortly after Gretzky stepped down and later confirmed that former Dallas Stars head coach Dave Tippett would step in to fill the void. Tippett has a championship in the IHL with the 1999 Houston Aeros and playoff experience in the NHL, including a visit to the conference finals in 2007 with the Stars.
A new era has begun in Phoenix; the Dave Tippett era. Time will tell how he does, but I’m feeling even more excited for the season to start now!
